Men in the UK will be able to buy Viagra over the counter after consulting with a pharmacist and without a prescription for the first time today.
ViagraConnect manufacturer, Pfizer, estimates more than a fifth of men aged over 18 in Britain suffer from erectile dysfunction, but almost half of those over 40 have not sought medical help.
The erectile dysfunction drug will be available in 14,000 stores across Britain and via pharmacy websites.
The tablets will be available exclusively from Boots until 10 April.
Those aged 18 and over will be able to buy the tablets following a conversation with a pharmacist or after filling out an online form. Men can ask to speak to a pharmacist in a private consultation room if preferred.
The pharmacists will determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine and potential side effects. They will advise men to consult with their doctor no less than six months after buying Viagra so that any potential underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease can be investigated.
A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.
Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day.
Viagra is is already available as an NHS prescription free of charge for those eligible not to pay for their prescriptions.
The pharmacist will decide how many packs will be supplied in a transaction.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced in November it was to steer men away from buying the tablets from. In 2016 £17m worth of unlicensed and counterfeit Viagra was seized.
Kristie Sourial, Pfizer’s medical manager, said: “It’s important to remember that erectile dysfunction is a medical condition, and that the impact often goes beyond the physical symptoms – it can lead to men feeling anxious, depressed and lacking in confidence.
“Our hope is that the availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies will encourage men who do nothing about their erectile dysfunction to seek help, and encourage those who are inclined to seek help to do so sooner.”
Viagra tablets are thought to be available in two dosages, and the pharmacy will determine how many pills should be ordered a day.Read more
Currently, one in threeomycin stewardship project members are prescribed a dose of 50 mg, which is still available.

Viagra (Sildenafil) is a prescription medication that helps improve blood flow to the penis. It belongs to a class of drugs known as phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. Viagra is used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) by blocking the function of an enzyme called PDE5. This enzyme breaks down cGMP, an compound of nerves that controls blood flow in the penis. cGMP is responsible for producing the cGMP enzyme, which leads to increased blood flow into the penis. This medication can help men with erectile dysfunction (ED) improve their ability to achieve and keep an erection. Read More >>

“Viagra has never been more popular,” says Robert A. Gaffney, Ph. D., director of the Institute of the Science of the Future, a research group at the University of Toronto.
The drug has helped men suffering from erectile dysfunction, and is becoming a target for other medical research projects.
Gaffney was a leading researcher at the University of Toronto and the Institute of the Science of the Future, and was a co-author of the first scientific paper on the potential risks associated with Viagra.
Gaffney said in an interview that while some of the studies on the drug have been of little value, he was pleased by the results and said he hopes to be able to carry on using Viagra with other medications.
“I’ve always been interested in what Viagra might be doing to people,” Gaffney said.
Gaffney is currently working on an important drug to improve blood flow to the penis that could potentially help men with erectile dysfunction, such as pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary arterial hypertension.
The drug, called sildenafil, is a prescription drug for erectile dysfunction. But the FDA warned that a drug with a different mechanism could cause heart attack and stroke, and the new study could lead to the approval of Viagra.
“I think the safety profile of Viagra is very encouraging,” Gaffney said. “The safety profile of Viagra in men with low blood pressure is very different from men who have normal blood pressure, but Viagra has the potential to help improve blood flow to the penis, so it can cause more problems.”
While Viagra is not a cure for erectile dysfunction, it is not a drug for treating it.
Gaffney said the safety of Viagra is not a reason to prescribe it for men who have other health problems.
“There are other medicines that can help improve blood flow to the penis, such as nitrates,” Gaffney said. “But we know that this medication is only used for men who have pulmonary hypertension.”
Viagra is a drug that works by inhibiting a key enzyme in the body’s nitric oxide-producing system. It can cause a drop in the amount of nitric oxide in the blood that is produced, and this can cause a drop in blood pressure.
Gaffney said he and his co-authors have not been able to find any data that support Viagra’s effectiveness.
Gaffney said that while Viagra may help men who have heart problems to improve blood flow to the penis, it does not cause a drop in blood pressure.
“If you’re in the middle of a heart attack or stroke, that’s not the end of the story,” Gaffney said.
The drug is not for use by men who suffer from heart disease. If you are taking any other drug, you must first consult your doctor before taking Viagra.
Gaffney said he hopes to be able to carry out more studies on Viagra’s effects on men with heart disease. His research is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the University of Toronto, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Foundation.
“This is a very exciting study,” Gaffney said. “This is a very exciting study that’s really interesting, because it’s a new drug that we’re really looking forward to.”
The drug is currently under investigation in Europe for safety issues, Gaffney said. There is no information about its potential use in men with heart problems.
“We’re hoping for a new drug to help people with cardiovascular problems,” Gaffney said. “If there is a drug that can be used to treat these problems, we can start doing some research on it.”
“It’s definitely not the only way to help people with these problems,” Gaffney said. “It’s a very interesting drug, and it has potential to be used to improve blood flow to the penis, and it’s not a good idea.”
VIDEOGaffney said he hopes to carry out further studies on Viagra’s safety in men with heart problems.
Viagra’s safety in men with heart problems is currently not well established.
